Southwark Mayor opens ‘Star of India’ scheme

Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Jeffrey Hook, recently unveiled a garden bench to mark the official opening of the ‘Star of India’ scheme in Peckham, a housing development built by volunteers working alongside skilled construction staff.

The attractive block of 12 flats for rent is built on the site of the former Star of India public house in Brayards Road. The project was developed by charity Southwark Habitat for Humanity working with over 1800 volunteers from local colleges and companies working together on site. The homes are now owned by two local housing charities, Hexagon Housing Association and New World Housing Association.

Susan Simmonds, Chief Executive of Southwark Habitat for Humanity, said “It was a tremendous privilege to be able to work with so many volunteers to develop this site and work together to provide decent homes for people to live. We have tremendous support of time, expertise, and donations from a wide range of partners that brought this project to life and have built a small community.”

The Mayor was joined by young tenants of New World Housing Association in declaring the scheme officially opened.
