Apprentice is the Dogs
The Greyhound Pub at Cobbs Corner Sydenham, SE26 is a well known local landmark which unfortunately over the years had fallen into a state of decline. Hexagon successfully negotiated the purchase of the former pub, together with the extensive grounds that surround it: Planning consent was obtained to build a mixed-use development and well as refurbish the pub building.
Purelake New Homes are now on-site constructing the scheme, and once finished it will consist of commercial space at ground floor level, 40 rented flats (funded by the Homes And Communities Agency) and the refurbished Greyhound which will become a restaurant. As part of Hexagon’s contract with Purelake New Homes, the New Business and Community Investment teams worked with Purelake New Homes to secure an apprentice position for a Hexagon resident at the Greyhound development.

After being advertised in Home News, our residents’ newsletter, this apprenticeship in Groundworks was secured by Daniel Davis, a 26 year old Hexagon resident from South Bermondsey. Daniel had been unemployed for four months when this opportunity came along and says that he was ‘over the moon’ when he was offered the job. Since starting with Purelake, he’s been involved in a variety of tasks including digging trenches, laying steel mesh formworks and adding concrete to foundations.
Daniel’s training side of the apprenticeship will start in September and with this, he feels that there could be many opportunities to go further with Purelake in the future. One of Daniel’s bosses at Purelake, Noel Convert describes Daniel as ‘reliable, enthusiastic and a good lad’. So who knows, maybe this is the beginning of great things for this young Hexagon resident…
