Hexagon meets local need

Hexagon’s recently completed development of 13 houses in Forest Hill was handed over in April 2008.

The development comprises 5 x 4 bed 6 person general needs houses; 6 x 4 bed 8 person general needs houses; 1 x 3 bed 6 person wheelchair adapted house and 1 x 4 bed 8 person wheelchair adapted house.  Seven of the houses face onto Normanton Street with a further 6 houses located in Alexander Evans Mews, off Sunderland Avenue.

The site was formerly owned by Forest Hill Methodist Church and completion of a new church building prior to occupation of the houses formed part of the Planning Conditions.  The main contractor, Purelake New Homes, were responsible for construction of the new church building with adjoining community facilities for the Methodist Church as well as the new houses for Hexagon.

Mrs. Shala, whose 3 year old son has cerebral palsy, has been allocated one of the wheelchair units in Alexander Evans Mews.  Mrs. Shala says "moving to our new house has made such a difference to my son's independence, everyone has noticed the difference, he particularly enjoys going outside into the garden".

The houses were funded by Housing Corporation Social Housing Grant and the key funding commitments included Eco Homes ‘Very Good’, Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design.  Lead consultants were Survey & Design Partnership and the design was drawn up by Architects, Baily Garner.
