How do I insure my home?

Have you got Home Contents Insurance?

If you were burgled, flooded or had a fire, how would you replace your damaged furniture and belongings?

Apart from the distress of any of these things happening to you, imagine the added stress of being unable to replace your stolen or damaged furniture and possessions because you do not have Home Contents Insurance. Hexagon has made an arrangement with Allianz Insurance plc to provide a low cost insurance package for tenants and leaseholders. Hexagon do not benefit financially from this arrangement. Of course there are many other insurance companies offering Home Contents Insurance so it makes sense to shop around.

Surely Hexagon will compensate me for my damaged belongings?
No - we do not insure your furniture, carpets, personal belongings or decorations. You need to take out Home Contents Insurance to cover you against theft, fire, vandalism, water damage and other household risks.

What will Allianz Insurance plc’s Home Contents Insurance cover me for?
Most of your household goods and contents will be insured in your home. The insurance also covers replacement of external locks if your keys are stolen and the contents of your freezer. There is also cover for personal liability. Full details are set out in the policy.

Some of my furniture is quite old so I wouldn’t get very much would I?
The Allianz Insurance covers you for ‘New for Old’. All of your home contents are covered by the policy on a ‘new for old’ basis, with the exception of linen and clothing which will be replaced at their current cost, less an amount for wear and tear. However, if you under-insure your contents, any claim will be reduced to the same proportion as the contents sum insured bears to the replacement value.

I’ve heard that insurance is expensive – how much will it cost?
We think that the Allianz Insurance Home Contents Insurance policy represents good value for money. The cost of the insurance depends on the value of your belongings. You need to work out how much it would cost to replace every item in your home at current prices.

Here are some examples of the cost:

Sum insured              Fortnightly premium          Monthly premium     Annual Premium by Cheque,

at any Post Office              by Direct Debit       postal Order,
(includes a Giro Transaction                            credit/debit card
                               charge of 46p)
£6000.00 (the
minimum for
over 60’s)                  3.40                                 6.37                          76.44

£9000.00 (the
minimum for
under 60’s)               4.87                                  9.55                         114.66

£15000.00                7.81                                 15.92                        191.10

Of course any sum can be insured – these are just a few examples - the premium payable will depend on the value of your possessions.

Payments can be made either in one lump sum for the year ahead, or by monthly Direct Debit, or by making fortnightly payments using a special payment card in the Post Office.

What happens if I don’t make the payments?
To make sure you are always covered you must keep up to date with your payments. You will not be able to make a claim unless your payments are up to date. If you don’t pay your insurance premium for 4 weeks your insurance will be cancelled.

If I make a claim, will I have to pay an excess?
No – there is no excess payable with the Allianz Insurance policy. Other insurers may expect you to pay a sum towards any claim – an excess. If you are thinking of using another insurance company this is worth checking.
