Newstead Road rehabilitation centre in Lewisham provides personalised support to 12 people in a purpose-built property comprising 12 self-contained flats with full mobility access, generous communal facilities and gardens.
A new service model was introduced in May 2013 using a ‘core and flexi’ model. A core team of skilled staff provide 24-hour support focussing on managing mental health, tenancy sustainment and day-to-day activities, with the aim of increasing confidence and self-esteem as well as skills for independent living. In addition, residents are encouraged to select “My Time” workers to support them with social and education activities.
The service works closely with the Enhanced Rehab Team from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, who have a key role in identifying appropriate pathways for service users and supporting their clinical care. Hexagon staff are trained and supported in using psychological approaches to benefit the residents’ rehabilitation, and standardised research tools are used to monitor progress. The targeted length of stay at Newstead Road is 2 years, after which most residents will move on to their own flat with a lower support package.
A unique aspect of the service at Newstead Road is the development of activities around gardening and animal care, as research shows that these types of activities can be very positive and therapeutic for people with complex mental health needs. The property has a chicken coup and a wildlife pond, offers activities around gardening and encourages residents to experience keeping pets. For more information on Newstead Road, contact:
